Beyond
the16,800’ Baralach La pass in Lahul, lie
the Lingti Plains. To the west is the Shingo
La and to the north is the Phitse La, both
over 15,000’ Across them is Zanskar, and
area of awesome natural beauty, and of rare
Buddhist treasures. For centuries, pilgrims
and traders have trekked across these areas
on foot, horse and yak. Today the trekker
comes here for adventure. You are on top of
the world.
Rocks sculpted into weird shapes by winter
winds loom large in colours that are seldom
seen elsewhere. Villages are far and few
between but the villagers, whenever
encountered, are hospitable and always offer
you a cup of butte-tea. Lamas welcome you to
ancient monasteries scattered on steep cliff
edges.
You do not have to be young or a mountaineer
to trek this incredible and savagely
beautiful terrain. But the harsh and arid
climate does require you to be fit for the
extremes in temperature are always there.
The treks into Zanskar could be from 12 days
to 24 days duration.
